Gloveboxes for OLED Manufacturing
OLED Manufacturing Under a Controlled Atmosphere
The production of OLEDs requires a consistently controlled process environment. Organic materials are highly sensitive to oxygen and moisture, and even the smallest contamination leads to degradation, reduced lifetime, and loss of quality.
Until the final encapsulation step, OLEDs must therefore be processed under inert conditions with purity levels of < 1 ppm O₂ and H₂O.
With customized system solutions, we enable stable and reproducible processes for the production of organic electronics, from material handling to fully integrated production lines.
Structure of an OLED Panel
A fully functional OLED panel consists of several precisely coordinated components:
- Substrate serving as the carrier for the active light-emitting layers
- Backplane for electronic control of the pixels
- Encapsulation layer for protection against environmental influences
The encapsulation process is a critical step. Throughout the entire service life of the OLED device, it must not only provide mechanical protection for the nanometer-thin layers but, above all, protect them from oxygen and moisture, which would immediately impair OLED performance.
MBRAUN Solutions for OLED Manufacturing
In addition to atmosphere control, particle contamination plays a key role in OLED manufacturing. As substrate sizes increase, the risk of defects such as pinholes on the device rises significantly, resulting in reduced display quality and lower production yields.
MBRAUN provides the required environment for stable and scalable OLED manufacturing processes.
Our solutions enable:
- Inert gas conditions with < 1 ppm O₂ and H₂O
- Minimal particle contamination (up to ISO Class 2 according to ISO 14644-1)
- Safe handling and storage of sensitive materials
- Integration of coating and vacuum technologies
- Closed process chains without atmospheric exposure
- Scalability from laboratory to production
The combination of glovebox technology, gas purification, and system integration creates controlled manufacturing environments for the highest quality requirements.
Manufacturing Technologies for OLEDs
OLED manufacturing requires the combination of various coating and vacuum deposition technologies:
Vacuum Deposition (Thermal Evaporation)
- Industry standard
- Patterning using Fine Metal Masks (FMM)
- High precision and film quality
- Limitations in scalability
Inkjet Printing
- Deposition of soluble OLED materials without masks
- Reduced material consumption
- Strongly growing industrial potential
Slot-Die Coating
