Electrolyte Filling for Battery Manufacturing

Electrolyte filling is one of the most critical and technically demanding process steps in battery cell manufacturing. The electrolyte enables ion transport between the anode and cathode and is therefore essential for the cell's performance. Complete and uniform wetting of the electrodes and separator forms the basis for high performance, long service life, and maximum safety.

Cells are handled in a dry atmosphere (dew point < -78°C) or under an inert gas atmosphere and are filled under vacuum. Depending on the cell type, this is carried out either by applying a localized vacuum inside the cell or within a vacuum chamber.

For optimum electrolyte distribution, several process parameters are critical. These include the filling rate, pressure conditions, as well as defined dwell and soaking times. Only the precise interaction of these factors ensures complete impregnation of the cell stack and consistently high cell quality.
